There’s a lot to be said for the influence that the people around you have. You may have had an experience where you spent some time with someone that your parents didn’t necessarily approve of, and when you came home, they could tell, because you showed some of their traits.
Make a point of spending time with those that you aspire to be like: whether you want to be a better father, husband or developer, improve your business skills or have a more fulfilling spiritual life, seek out those that you admire and just spend time with them.
What do you NEED? A philanthropic mission
When I first wrote about the 50 things I wanted to before the end of 2013, I had a few philanthropic goals in there and one of them was to give away $1000 on top of my regular charitable giving.
I’ve been doing it here and there, but I thought I’d open it up and just ask who has a need that they need met. I’m very blessed and while I still have goals of my own that I’m still trying to meet, I’m better off than most people in the world. So with that, I’m looking for people who have a real need for something, however big or small it may be.
I will selectively and randomly pick out a few people that I find really deserving and just take care of it for them. I probably won’t be able to help as many people as I’d like, but it’s something. So with that, help spread the word and find me some people who need something, and have them get in touch with me.
Christianity, Islam, Judaism, faith, doubt and fanaticism
I happened upon a thought-provoking TED talk this morning, about an agnostic Jewish woman (Lesley Hazleton) who spent several years studying Muhammad and his revelation of the Quran. She discusses how he had doubt about what happened to him that night and it’s doubt that forms up the very fibre of our faith: a point that applies to all of us, regardless of what we believe (or don’t believe).
Despair is self-fulfilling. If we call something impossible, we act in such a way that we make it so.

I just watched a TED talk by Ronny Edry, and it was a brilliant segue from my weekend into the working week.
On Saturday night, Martina & I went to see Heidi Baker talk at a conference in Sarasota called Love Them to Life. Her mission involves living in Mozambique, and planting churches and opening orphanages with a simple root in love. She loves people to life, meeting their needs in the moment they’re in, whether that’s trimming someone’s nails, or giving them some water or shelter.
