My favourite album: The 2nd Law

Whenever I’m asked for my favourite anything, I always seize up because a favourite anything is so binary. It’s less clear cut for me and I can always convince myself that there are many favorites for different occasions and situations.

This is equally true for my favourite album. It’s so hard to select a single album which reigns supreme above all others. There are certainly a lot of good albums out there.

However, I think that all considered, my favourite album ever is The 2nd Law by Muse. Muse have probably been my favourite band ever since Origin of Symmetry came out. Their songwriting, production, creativity and especially their talent (as evidenced by their live performances) have rightly made them one of the biggest rock bands of the 21st century.

The 2nd Law is a really special album. It’s a perfect mix of rock anthems, experiments in electronic rock, love songs and tunes that challenge political fallacies. There isn’t a single bad or even mediocre track on the album: ever single song is a winner and I find myself regularly listening to the whole album which isn’t something that can be said of me for many other albums.

My decision might also be swayed by my personal affection for Muse and how much of a part they were of my college and university years. Me going to see them live after they released The 2nd Law may also be an influencing factor: it was undoubtedly the best live performance I have ever been to and I’m hopeful that they’ll tour again after Drones is released.

For now though, back to listening to The 2nd Law… 🎤 “Follow me. You can follow me. I will always keep you safe.” 🎤
